Dr. Duminda Samarasinghe (MBBS, DCH, MD, FACC) is the first board-certified paediatric cardiologist in the country currently serving at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH). As the flag-bearer in paediatric cardiology, he has worked with a long-term vision to develop the field of paediatric cardiology. In 2008, he developed and implemented a data management system for children with heart disease at LRH, which was subsequently adopted by the other paediatric cardiology centres nationwide. In addition, he was instrumental in establishing a heart valve and tissue bank in liaison with the Rotary Club of Sri Lanka and the Oxford heart valve bank which now provides cardiac tissue needed for heart surgeries in children. Little Hearts Project, established to construct the 12-storey cardiac and critical care complex at the Premier Children’s Hospital in Sri Lanka is one of his remarkable contributions towards the development of this field in Sri Lanka. He also led the paediatric cardiac team to win the "Cardiology Team of the Year" award at the BMJ South Asia Awards in 2015. He was the President of the Sri Lanka Heart Association (Current Sri Lanka College of Cardiology) in 2018-19 and President of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians in 2024-25. He is also the Chairman of the Children’s Heart Project and severs as a board member of National Health Development Fund. He has significantly advanced academia through his research, public outreach, and education of healthcare professionals. He has been an invited speaker at over 100 national and international scientific conferences and has introduced several innovative concepts in both clinical and non-clinical settings.
